Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Norway's running sensation, added some serious sparkle to his trophy case on Saturday (August 10) by bagging his first Olympic gold in the 5,000m at Paris 2024!
After a nail-biting showdown in the 1,500m earlier in the week, where he finished just off the podium in fourth, Ingebrigtsen was out for redemption—and boy, did he get it! The 23-year-old took control in the final stretch, cruising past his competitors with a time of 13:13.66, leaving Kenya’s Ronald Kwemoi trailing nearly two seconds behind him.
Kwemoi snagged silver in 13:15.04, while America’s Grant Fisher sprinted his way to bronze, clocking in at 13:15.13.
Ingebrigtsen's quest for gold wasn’t without its drama. After conceding the 1,500m earlier in the competition, he approached the 5,000m with a cool head, hanging back in fifth place for most of the race.
But with 600m to go, Ethiopian star Hagos Gebrhiwet made a bold move, sparking a fiery final lap. As the bell rang, Gebrhiwet was leading, but Ingebrigtsen had other plans. With half a lap to go, the Norwegian unleashed his signature kick, surging to the front and never looking back. He turned on the jets and rocketed to victory, adding Olympic gold to his double world titles in the 5,000m.
Talk about a comeback!
