Femke Bol was born in Amersfoort, a city in the central Netherlands. From a young age, Bol displayed an exceptional talent for athletics, particularly in sprinting and hurdling. She started her athletic journey at local clubs and quickly progressed through the ranks, showing promise in both flat sprints and hurdle events.
Bol first gained international attention as a junior athlete. She competed in the 400 meters hurdles, an event that would eventually become her specialty. Her breakthrough came at the 2019 European U20 Championships, where she won the gold medal in the 400 meters hurdles, setting a championship record with a time of 56.25 seconds.
Bol's rise in the senior ranks was rapid. In 2020, she established herself as one of Europe's top 400 meters hurdlers, setting several personal bests and breaking national records. She also proved her versatility by competing in the 400 meters flat and the 4x400 meters relay.
The year 2021 was a defining one for Bol. She made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic) by winning the bronze medal in the 400 meters hurdles with a time of 52.03 seconds, setting a new European record in the process. This race is often referred to as one of the greatest in the history of the event, as it featured multiple record-breaking performances. Bol also helped the Netherlands secure a silver medal in the 4x400 meters mixed relay.
In 2022, Bol continued her dominance in the 400 meters hurdles, winning the gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Munich and the gold medal in the 400 meters flat. Her performances throughout the season established her as a dominant force in both the 400 meters hurdles and flat races.
At the 2023 World Athletics Championships, Bol further cemented her legacy by winning gold in the 400 meters hurdles and anchoring the Dutch 4x400 meters relay team to a historic gold medal. Her performance in the relay, where she made up significant ground to clinch victory, was one of the highlights of the championships.
