Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, grew up in an athletic family, with her father, Willie McLaughlin, being a semi-finalist in the 400 meters at the 1984 Olympic Trials, and her mother, Mary, being a high school runner. Sydney’s older brother, Taylor, was also an accomplished athlete, competing for the University of Michigan in track and field.
McLaughlin started competing in track and field at an early age and quickly became a standout athlete. By the time she was in high school, she was already breaking records and making headlines, competing against much older athletes.
McLaughlin’s professional career took off immediately. She qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics as a 17-year-old, becoming the youngest U.S. Olympian to compete in track and field in over four decades. She reached the semi-finals in the 400m hurdles, showcasing her immense potential.
Her major breakthrough came in 2019, when she won a silver medal in the 400m hurdles at the World Championships in Doha. In 2021, she became the first woman to break the 52-second barrier in the 400m hurdles, setting a new world record of 51.90 seconds at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021 due to the pandemic), McLaughlin cemented her status as one of the greatest hurdlers of all time. She won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles, setting another world record with a time of 51.46 seconds. She also won a gold medal as part of the U.S. women's 4x400m relay team.
McLaughlin continued her dominance in 2022, breaking her own world record twice more, including a staggering 50.68 seconds at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. This performance solidified her status as one of the greatest athletes in the sport.
In 2022, Sydney married Andre Levrone Jr., a former NFL wide receiver, and now goes by Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. Known for her strong Christian faith, Sydney often speaks about the role her faith plays in her life and career. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is widely regarded as one of the most talented and accomplished athletes in track and field history. Her ability to break world records consistently and perform under pressure has made her a global superstar. She has not only redefined what is possible in the 400m hurdles but has also inspired a new generation of athletes with her grace, humility, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
