Kenneth Rooks, a former BYU Cougar and standout track athlete, etched his name in history on Wednesday by securing a silver medal in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Paris 2024 Olympics. In a race that saw him start from the back of the pack, Rooks executed a remarkable strategy, surging forward in the final lap to secure his place on the podium with a personal best time of 8:06.41.
The race was a testament to Rooks' determination and tactical prowess. As the only American to qualify for the finals, he held his composure throughout the event. During the penultimate lap, Rooks made a decisive move, capturing the lead and holding off his competitors. However, defending Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco, who had been near the front for most of the race, edged Rooks out of first place at the final bend. El Bakkali crossed the finish line just ahead of Rooks with a time of 8:06.05, while the bronze medal went to Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot, who finished in 8:06.47.
Rooks’ silver medal is a historic achievement, making him only the third American ever to win an Olympic silver medal in the men’s steeplechase. His journey to the podium was marked by perseverance and a strong finish that saw him set a new personal best time in one of the most competitive races in Olympic history. Notably, world-record holder Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia, who was a strong contender, was forced out of the race after crashing over a barrier in the final laps while Rooks was in the lead.
Before his Olympic success, Rooks had already demonstrated his dominance in the event by winning the U.S. Olympic Trials with a time of 8:21.92. His transition to professional running came in January 2024 when he signed with Nike, continuing his training under the guidance of BYU men’s track and field coach Ed Eyestone in Provo, Utah.
Reflecting on his achievement, Rooks shared his excitement with KSL TV: “It was just a dream. Sometimes, I’ll just dream of races and how they’ll turn out. But it was just incredible to just experience it in real life and live the dream.”
Rooks’ silver medal is a proud moment for U.S. athletics and a testament to his hard work and dedication. As he celebrates this milestone, the future looks bright for this young athlete who has already made his mark on the global stage.
