Martín Álvaro was born in Spain and developed an interest in athletics at a young age. At age nine, he began participating in athletics, and by age 13, he had transitioned to race walking due to a knee injury he sustained as a distance runner. His introduction to race walking was influenced by coach Juan Mendez, who visited his school and inspired him to pursue the sport.
Álvaro is committed to his education alongside his athletic career. He is pursuing a degree in Political Science at the Complutense University of Madrid and is also studying for a law degree at the National University of Distance Education in Spain.
