Samuel Fitwi Sibhatu, the Eritrean-born German long-distance runner, stands as a shining example of determination and resilience in the face of adversity. Born in Eritrea and having migrated to Germany during his early teen years, Fitwi's running journey is as inspiring as it is extraordinary.
Fitwi's talent became apparent when he won the 2017 European Cross Country Championships in the Under-23 category. His achievement was extraordinary, given that he had only started serious training a couple of years prior. In 2020, he topped it all by clinching the gold medal at the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon, proving his mettle against Europe's finest athletes.
His personal bests are equally impressive. Fitwi recorded a remarkable 27:59 in the 10,000m event in 2019, becoming the first German runner to break the 28-minute barrier since 1995. His record stands as the second-fastest time by a German athlete, just behind Dieter Baumann's 27:54.Â
However, Fitwi's journey has not been without setbacks. Despite his impressive accomplishments, he has yet to qualify for an Olympic event. Yet, his spirit remains unbroken. He once said, ""Every setback is a setup for a comeback."" This resilience is the cornerstone of his success and an inspiration to upcoming athletes.
