Ewa Swoboda produced a dominant performance to win the women's 60m at the World Indoor Tour meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on Tuesday (30 January 2024).
The Polish sprinter surged to victory in a time of 7.07 seconds, smashing the meeting record of 7.11 that had been set by Dafne Schippers in 2017.
Swoboda's time is the second-fastest in the world this year, behind only the 7.04 she ran in Torun earlier this month. It is also the third-fastest time ever run by a Polish woman indoors.
"I am very happy with my performance today," said Swoboda. "I knew I was in good shape, but I didn't expect to run that fast. It is a great start to the season for me."
Swoboda's victory was the highlight of a strong night for Polish athletes at the meeting. Natalia Kaczmarek won the women's 400m in a personal best of 51.23, while Patryk Dobek won the men's 800m in 1:44.84.
The meeting also saw a number of other impressive performances, including a world indoor best of 50.54 for Lieke Klaver in the women's 400m and a meeting record of 7.78 for Nadine Visser in the women's 60m hurdles.
Swoboda's performance is a timely boost for the Polish sprinter as she prepares for the European Indoor Championships, which will be held in Torun next month. She is one of the favorites for gold in the 60m, and her performance in Ostrava suggests that she is in peak form.
